Abstract

Inspired by the cultural scientific way of Aby Warburg (1866-1929) operate with the images that man thought to guide himself, in his stories and his arts, we will investigate five iconographic themes that allow us to problematize them as "images of cosmic spiritual orientation": São Miguel Arcanjo, Santa Rosa de Lima, and three representations apparitions of the Catholic Holy Virgin: Guadalupe, del Cerro, and Caacupé. With the analysis and disposition of the images in variable sequences, as in the panels of the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne, we will undertake an "exegetical excursion" through the hybrid empathic formulations (Pathosformeln) of these representations, expressive of the polar tensions and energetic inversions, which were sublimated in the American continent, in the post-colonial context. Asking us about the histories of these stylistic conformations, languages, and selective principles, we will question the function of these imagistic and artistic forms in his cultural medium (Sitz im Leben), reflecting, at the same time, about what Warburg called "historical psychology of human expression". From stars to gods and saints - Per monstra ad sphaeram-, we will seek the "reform desires" that were undertaken in the struggles between the poles of tension, so that they reveal to us the fears, the passionate phobos, what has remained, what has become, how and why.
