Abstract

The geological storage of CO2 is encouraged by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) to contain the increase in the average temperature of the planet compared to the pre-industrial era. The project aims to evaluate the geological feasibility of the CO2 storage technology implementation in the Southeastern Brazil, where the main stationary sources of emissions in the country are concentrated. The sedimentary sequences of the Rio Bonito Formation, Paraná Basin are a promising alternative in geological, logistical and economic terms. The main focus will be on the Rio Bonito Formation sandstones and coal seams. The project considers the original hypothesis of hybrid reservoir, where distinguished geological layers with different composition, porosity, permeability and volume are considered together as a unique CO2 reservoir. For this evaluation, the most modern techniques of implicit geological modeling in a three-dimensional (3D) environment will be applied.
