Abstract

The Geographical Indication (GI) is an industrial property asset registered in Brazil by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and identifies a product or service from a certain location that has become known (Indication of Origin), or when a certain characteristic or quality intrinsic to the product is due to its geographical origin (Denomination of Origin). Although the geographical micro-region of Presidente Prudente has been dedicated to the production of sweet potato since the last decades of the last century, including leading the indicators of planted area and quantities produced in the State of São Paulo, it has only recently gained state and national recognition. of this agricultural product. Thus, this proposal aims to analyze the socio-economic and territorial history of sweet potato production in this location, generating information that proves the relative importance of the microregion in the whole of the sweet potato production chain and this agricultural activity in the regional economy. Secondary data available in the official time series will be used to determine indicators of concentration (Gini Locationcional) and productive specialization (Location Quotient). Additionally, the two-way joining multivariate grouping technique will be used to maximize the visualization of the results obtained. The current economic reality of the territory will also be analyzed, identifying and measuring the distribution of producers in the municipalities that make up the micro-region, planted area, volume, and scale of production. It is expected that the research will result in information that will prove that the micro-region has historical and current economic realities intrinsically linked to sweet potato production, as these human factors when associated with local knowledge, production systems shared by its community and the organization of the production chain, may support the possible recognition of this territory by the INPI as an Indication of Origin in the production of "pink" sweet potato.(AU)
