Abstract

This internship proposal is linked to the master's research entitled "The geographic space of the Timburi Environmental Protection Area from a socio-environmental perspective" (process 2021/00194-6), which has as its main objective to elaborate a database with social and environmental aspects of the study area, as well as to understand the relationships between the local community and the environment they inhabit, since rural activities govern the lives of the residents, who, since 2019, had their neighborhood transformed into a Conservation Unit. The Environmental Protection Areas in Brazil are a type of Sustainable Use Conservation Unit, whose main objective is to protect biological diversity, discipline the occupation process, and ensure the sustainability of the use of natural resources. Such objectives are directly linked to the concept of rural multifunctionality, which is defined as a new development model that intends to diversify the rural economy by producing tangible goods for the market and public goods linked to the well-being of citizens and respect for the environment. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that such concept be incorporated into the current research master's thesis, and for this it is necessary to deepen the knowledge in the area, broadening the theoretical-methodological debate about this theme in Brazil. To this end, an internship with Professor José Antonio Segrelles Serrano, from the University of Alicante-Spain, coordinator of the Grupo Interdisciplinario de Estudios Críticos y de América Latina (GIECRYAL) and a major reference on the subject, will be an enormous contribution in the quantitative and qualitative sense to the ongoing research in Brazil.
