Abstract

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease observed in the population and is mainly characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) and by producing classic symptoms such as tremor, muscle rigidity and bradykinesia. However, PD is also responsible for generating other non-classical symptoms, such as respiratory dysfunction, which can occur due to the neurodegeneration caused by increased oxidative stress and neuroinflammation of neuronal groups involved in the control and regulation of respiration: pre-Botzinger complex, retrotrapezoid nucleus and rostral ventral respiratory group. Given this characteristic of PD pathogenesis and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, in this study we will investigate the ability of omega-3 in attenuating neuroanatomical and physiological respiratory damage in a mouse-induced PD model by bilateral injection of 6 - hydroxydopamine in the striatum.(AU)
