Abstract

The objective is to describe the dynamics of energy use over time the laying period and to evaluate the effect of different levels of feed on the basal energy expenditure in broiler breeders. Two trial will be conducted using broiler breeders of the Cobb 500 strain. The first trial will be developed to describe the variations in energy expenditure such as total heat production (THP) and fasting heat production (FHP) throughout the laying period of the broiler breeders. 40 birds from 27 to 55 weeks of age will be used. The weight of the eggs and the total excreta produced will also be measured and at the end of the experiment, the body composition of the birds will be estimated by DXA. To describe the dynamics of energy, data of visceral mass, THP, AME and energy retention will be used. In the second trial, three levels of feed will be evaluated: T1 (Quantity stipulated for each age), T2 (T1 + 25%) and T3 (T1-25%). In total, 48 birds from 29 to 57 weeks of age will be used. The treatments will be randomly distributed and the birds will be allocated in respirometric chambers to measure the gases for the calculation of THP and FHP. At the beginning and at the end of the experimental period, the birds' body composition will be measured by DXA and at the end the birds will be slaughtered to determine the visceral mass. The data of heat production, VO2, VCO2 will be expressed per bird, kilogram of live weight and by metabolic weight. The results obtained from FHP will be adjusted in an equation that correlates them with each level of feeding, as well as, estimate the contribution of the chemical and visceral components on the FHP.
