Abstract

This project aims at the synthesis of sugarcane bagasse/polydopamine (BG/PDA) combined with graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO) and/or magnetite (Fe3O4) towards the removal of bisfenol A (BPA) and chromium (VI) ions from aqueous systems. The contents of GO and/or magnetite in BG/PDA adsorbents will be optimized in preliminary experiments in order to obtain adsorbents chemically stable in the pH range of 2 to 10 and magnetically responsive under magnetic field of 0.1 T to 1.0 T. Then, the adsorbents will be characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy. The magnetic properties will be determined by vibrating sample magnetometer. In order to understand the adsorption mechanism, batch adsorption studies will be performed as a function of adsorbent dose, pH, contact time and initial concentrations. The adsorbents efficiency towards the treatment of large volumes will be evaluated by column adsorption studies; column mass or height, flow rate, initial concentration and magnetic field will be varied. The combined effect of independent variables that affect the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions and BPA will be quantified by response surface method and central composite design (RSM-CCD). It is expected to obtain low cost magneto-responsive bioadsorbents with high adsorptive capacity towards Cr(VI) ions and BPA and more efficient that carbon active adsorbents.
