Abstract

Numerical simulation is a powerful tool to reduce production costs in the pressing and sintering process. As an example, it may improve dimensional control and the final mechanical properties of the produced parts. On these aspects, a satisfactory prediction of mechanical properties in green compacts is essential to ensure the integrity of the piece in a future process such as green machining and sintering. However, predicting failure in green compacts requires further investigations due to the complex numerical simulations that are required. In this context, this research proposal aims to develop a validation procedure of numerical models for predicting failure in green compacts. Therefore, different mechanical tests are proposed with the presence of inserts to induce failure - or quasi-failure. Two types of experimental tests are proposed: closed-die compaction with inserts and unconfined - uniaxial and diametral compression - in the specimens manufactured in the confined stage. The data from the tests will be confronted with numerical models from the literature and simulations in the commercial Finite Element software Abaqus. The agreements and disagreements in the validation procedure, as well as the possibilities to optimize parameters, will be analyzed.
