Abstract

Complete dentures are commonly used for the rehabilitation of edentulous individuals. However, the surface of the acrylic resin used in the manufacture can favor the formation of biofilm-associated with Candida species and trigger local inflammation, the most prevalent being prosthesis-related stomatitis (RPE). The literature indicates that edentulism and the presence of inflammation are related to systemic diseases, especially cardiac alterations. Objective: To survey the prevalence and microbial load of Candida species in totally edentulous individuals without and with ERP through presumptive identification by CHROMagar-Candida and by molecular biology (Polymerase Chain Reaction - PCR) and relate the prevalence, microbial load, and degree of ERP with cardiac risk. Method: Individuals will be invited considering the eligibility factors and through anamnesis and clinical examination for the diagnosis of DRS, according to Newton's classification, considering the inclusion of individuals with grades 0, 2, 3, and 4, investigation of the medical history and dental and sociodemographic data collection. To analyze the prevalence and microbial load of Candida spp., the biofilm will be collected from the upper denture and palate, seeded in a specific culture medium CHROMagar-Candida for identification and quantification by counting colony forming units (CFU). Then, to confirm the presumptive identification, a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay will be performed. Cardiovascular risk will be assessed through heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure. The data will be submitted to normality (Shapiro-Wilks test) and homoscedasticity (Levene test) tests for application of the most appropriate analysis method considering a confidence interval of 95%.(AU)
