Abstract

Reservoirs are artificial environments built with the main purposes of generating energy and public water supply. However, other functions were added to these uses of water, such as the use for agricultural irrigation, navigation, recreation, aquaculture, dilution and purification of effluents and residues. Reservoirs are complex and dynamic systems, and detect all the effects of anthropogenic activities in the region, since they are part of a hydrographic basin. Eutrophication is one of the effects of these activities, resulting from the supply of nutrients from the use and occupation of the soil and from activities developed in the water body. One of the consequences of this artificial enrichment in the aquatic system is the occurrence of blooms of potentially toxin producing cyanobacteria, which can make the reservoir water infeasible for its multiple uses. Therefore, in this activities plan, which is linked to the project entitled "Application of alternative methodology for quantifying cyanobacteria in multiple-use water sources in the São Paulo State", it is intended to carry out a limnological diagnosis of 21 reservoirs in order to subsidize the larger project.
