Abstract

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), 80% of the global energy demand is derived from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources and their use implicate in environmental consequences as contribution to pollution, acid rain and climate change effect. To address these problems, much effort has been made towards a clean energy development and some reactions are at the core of the energy conversion technologies as the water electrolysis, CO2 reduction reaction, biomass upgrade and N2 reduction. The scientific problems are becoming increasingly complex, requiring an interdisciplinary research approach. Because of this, the creation of a team with defined, competent and complementary expertise, as proposed in this thematic project, is of fundamental importance for the transition from science of incremental progress to a science that involves paradigm shifts and real impact on society. The use of adsorbents and catalysts represent a promising strategy to overcome different challenges in energy transition, and consequently, have a direct impact in relation to the development of cleaner and sustainable processes and clean/renewable energy generation. This PhD project will focus on carbon capture and conversion (CCU) via adsorbents and catalysts, as a strategy to mitigate CO2 emissions. Moreover, there will be a interaction in the thematic project with the group working on new materials for energy applications. (AU)
