Abstract

The role of physical exercise on the thoracoabdominal asynchrony in patients with bronchiectasis (BCE) remains unknown. Objectives: To compare the effect of physical exercise on respiratory mechanics in individuals with and without BCE. Methods: Cross-sectional study that will evaluate patients with a diagnosis of BCE from the Pulmonology outpatient Clinic (HCFMUSP), between 18 and 60 years of age, of both genders. Anthropometric evaluation, lung function (spirometry) and exercise capacity (cardiopulmonary exercise test, CPET) will be evaluated. Constant load exercise test (CLET) will be performed concomitantly with optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP). Before and after exercise, the subjective perception of effort (Borg) will be evaluated. Quality of life will be assessed in individuals with BCE using the Quality of Life Questionnaire Bronchiectasis (QOL-B) and the Saint George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ). Dyspnea will be assessed using the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC). A control group composed of healthy individuals without any other respiratory disease, and matched for age and body mass index (BMI) will perform the same assessments except for the QOL-B. Data will be evaluated for normality (Shapiro Wilk) and comparison between groups will be performed using the t-test or Mann-Whittney test (based on normality). Categorical data will be compared using the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. The association between variables will be evaluated using the Pearson or Spearman test. The significance level will be set at 5%. Analyzes will be performed using the statistical software SPSS version 17.0.
