Abstract

Contamination and water scarcity are current problems that demand immediate actions to conserve them. Remediation of contaminated water can be performed by adsorbing contaminants and increasing the concentration of dissolved O2 in the medium. This project aims at developing new porous materials (cryogels) capable of adsorbing drugs and releasing O2 to the environment simultaneously. The cryogels will be produced by combining hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), microparticles of sugarcane or Moringa oleifera bagasse and calcium peroxide (CaO2) particles coated with amphiphilic molecules. The reaction rate between CaO2 and water, resulting in the release of O2, will be determined as a function of the chemical structure of the amphiphilic molecules, pH, and temperature. Adsorption studies of caffeine, ibuprofen, and paracetamol, isolated and synthetic mixtures will be carried out in batch and column adsorption studies. The effects of pH, temperature, and O2 release on the adsorption capacity of cryogels will be investigated. The efficiency of the cryogels developed will also be evaluated in the remediation of a real laboratory waste from practical classes for undergraduate students at IQUSP. Such laboratory waste contains mainly caffeine, ibuprofen, and paracetamol. (AU)
