Abstract

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors operating under visible LED light irradiation are promising for portable devices that enable detection of tumor markers at very low concentrations. This development requires high-performance PEC sensing platforms in which light pulses create locally high ion fluxes that are sensitive to steric hindrance effects from bio-recognition. In this work, we shall investigate and fabricate PEC biosensors with sensitization of the TiO2 nanocrystalline rods grown onto titanium microwire. The activity under visible light irradiation will be enhanced by gold electrodeposition and functionalizing the system with organic molecules such as L-cysteine, 3-mercaptopropionic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid. Because an optimization step is essential to reach the necessary performance, the materials will be characterized, and their properties correlated with the photoactivity and computer studies. We will seek to understand the processes involved in the sensitization of TiO2 nanocrystalline rods in the presence of these organics as well as their impact on the performance of the biosensor.
