Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the conception that the Brazilian society has about the process of independence, which occurred in the XIX century through the culture of History category. To accomplish this we will conduct an analysis of the civilian-military parades during September 7th in the years after the impeachment of Dilma Rouseff, between 2016 and 2021. This analysis will be based on videos posted on Youtube. Through that, we intend to establish a connection between the recovery and the manipulation of a national past, focused on Independence, and the symbology of moral precepts strongly active in Brazil in the present days, investigating speeches, practices, and ideologies used in the parades. Our reflection will seek to highlight some current particularities of the Brazilian nation through its different nationalist manifestations and projects, considering its civic, cultural, political, and historical dimensions. In this matter, the field of studies on national celebrations constitutes an interesting research area, once it allows the analysis of "power rites" that are capable of creating and recreating social identities, including national ones. In regard to the September 7th parades and its conversion into audiovisual materials, we understand that in addition to representing public demonstrations of power, and eventually the state military power, it also symbolizes norms and values related to the past and the future to be internalized by part of the population, including its audiovisual production and reception. In this sense, we intend, in particular, to establish a relationship between aspects of Brazilian History culture presented in the parades and in the posts on Youtube and the current situation - in Brazil, but also worldwide - with the strengthening of far-right groups and the quick expansion of social networks.(AU)
