Abstract

This project intends to analyze how the musical performances of Grupo de Choro, Seresta e Serenata from the city of São Roque (SP) contribute to the formation of a sense of social belonging among its participants and to the production of locality. In order to do so, I mobilize the concepts of musicking, from Small (1998); locality, from Appadurai (1996); and also Turino's (2008) discussions about participatory and presentational performances. Aligned with the methodological perspective of the ethnography of music (Seeger, 2008) and through participant observation in the ambients where the performances take place, I seek to understand the motivations of the city residents to attend the event, the possible community ties established between them and how musical engagement is articulated with the production of locality. In a general sense, the research aims to contribute to academic works on popular music in Brazil; and, in a more specific dimension, with the knowledge about the sound-performative practices of choro and serenades in São Roque, the countryside of São Paulo.(AU)
