Abstract

The process of occupation of the Amazon has always been linked to strategic interests, starting with the construction of fortifications and the action of religious orders - whose objective was to protect the territory and control the indigenous communities - until the period of implementation of projects, aimed at the territorial integration and exploitation of natural resources. Considering these different processes, the development of urban space in the region took place in a particular way, for example, the nodes of occupation that emerged on the coast of the state of Pará, from the 17th century, resulted from the need of small vessels, which connected the cities of Belém and São Luiz, docking on land for supply and support purposes. This group of cities that emerged along the coast of Pará became known as the Salgado region (ÉGLER, 1961). Subsequently, development was influenced by the highways that integrated these urban centers into the dynamics of the urban network, from the 1950s onwards, and other cities along these highways emerged and made up this region. In this sense, this research aims to understand the singularities of the tidal cities of Salgado region and its implications for the organization of their social space, seeking to propose an urban typology that can capture the singularities of these cities. The research also intends to give visibility to these locations, highlighting their dynamics based on their economic activities directly linked to the sea, such as fishing and tourism, and verifying how these processes helped to structure this space. Some of these activities have strong connections to for leisure, which strategically boost improvements in the urban space. The population of the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB) is a target audience for this tourism, attracted by the beaches, rivers, and resorts. Two factors can be analyzed as a result of this dynamic: the concentration of second homes and the strong advance of the real estate market and large hotel chains, which characterize the intense process of metropolitan dispersion in strategic points in the Salgado micro-region. The research also intends to analyze and propose an urban typology that encompasses the singularities and daily life of these tidal cities, which are still barely studied. (AU)
