Abstract The Amazonia is home to an immense number of species. However, such an outstanding biotic diversification is still poorly understood, as we lack basic data on the actual number and distribution of species occurring throughout its vast territory. Consequently, studies on Amazonian diversification have historically focused on model organisms less affected by these biodiversity data shortfalls. This limited focus resulted in rough extrapolations for lesser-known organisms that hinder our broad understanding of diversification processes and threat status. Anuran amphibians are an example of such lesser-known organisms, and not only their taxonomic diversity is largely underestimated within Amazonia, but also their endemism levels and phylogenetic relationships. To investigate the historical and macro-ecological processes responsible for the origin and maintenance of Amazonian diversity, it is necessary to increase the resolution of these biodiversity dimensions. Therefore, this proposal aims at characterizing the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of Amazonian anurans (ca. 600 nominal species) and investigating the factors underlying their spatial patterns. These goals will be achieved through a framework of analyses involving DNA-based species delimitations build on an unprecedented molecular survey, species distribution modeling, a time-calibrated phylogenetic reconstruction for most species, and model-based biogeographic analyses. Moreover, anurans are particularly affected by the ongoing biodiversity crisis and great uncertainties remain regarding their conservation status within Amazonia. The unprecedented resolution in Amazonian anurans diversity resulting from this proposal will also open a window for conservation inferences. Thus, the current conservation status of species will be reassessed, as well as their future risks associated with land-use and climate change. (AU) | |
