Abstract

Wastewater treatment plants (WTPs) are an important tool for environmental protection and public health, as they act as a barrier against chemical and biological contamination in water bodies. Unfortunately, the level of sewage collection and treatment in Brazil is still below that of developed countries. Most Brazilian states still have most of their WTPs without adequate tertiary treatment for current demands for environmental protection. This study aims to test a tertiary treatment configuration developed by the proposing research group, composed of the combination of ozonation and activated carbon in the polishing of WTP effluent, but mainly in the production of reuse water to be used in agriculture. This project foresees the optimization of the treatment system for the elimination of microcontaminants, disinfection of the effluent and mainly the adjustment of the treatment for the production of quality water to irrigate orange plantations, which is the main agricultural product in the region of Limeira SP, where the School of Technology of UNICAMP is located. During the execution of the project, scientific visits are also planned between the research groups as well as the holding of scientific meetings and workshops. We are sure that this cooperation project will strengthen cooperation between the research groups involved, while producing important research results for both the agricultural regions of Brazil and the United States, in addition to training young researchers in environmental and agricultural issues, which are strategic for the development of Brazil.
