Abstract

The implementation of effective adiabatic (or quasistatic) dynamics in finite time is one of the main goals in the fields of quantum control and quantum thermodynamics. The reason for that is simple: avoiding transitions helps to decrease the energetic cost of the manipulation but also block the effects of external noise. The different techniques that aim to reach this goal, the so-called shortcuts to adiabaticity, have been increasing their number of applications, making urgent a better understanding of their costs and limitations. In the present research proposal, we intend to systematically compare the performance of the traditional techniques of shortcuts and that of optimal finite-time processes, which might be an interesting and advantageous alternative in many situations. Such comparison will be performed using always paradigmatic systems as benchmarks. In particular, we will seek paradigmatic models in quantum heat engines and quantum annealers. We also intend to develop an approach to shortcuts for open quantum systems using our knowledge on optimal finite-time processes in isolated quantum systems. We believe that this might complement the current literature which has focused mostly on isolated systems. (AU)
