Abstract

The intellectual exchanges between Brazil and France have elicited the interest of historiography since the 1990s and, more recently, intellectual historians dedicated to this subject have been concerned with recovering the bilaterality of this system of circulation of people and ideas, underlining the active ways in which Brazilian intellectuals took part in it. An important aspect of this geopolitics of exchange, however, remains to be studied when it comes to the specific case of History: the pursuit of doctoral courses in France by young Brazilian historians, a tendency which was strengthened from the 1970s on as a result of renewed research funding policies. This project aims to fill this gap through two fronts: the analysis of the 70 theses defended by Brazilian historians in France between 1970 and 2000, and the study of the letters exchanged between French and Brazilian historians involved in these séjours de recherche. By doing so, we intend to understand the effects and meanings of this career strategy in the trajectories of the agents involved on both sides of the equation: the Brazilian historians who obtained their PhD degrees in France and the French historians responsible for maintaining this specific circuit of transnational circulation.
