Abstract

Every property (mechanical, chemical, or even electrical) of metal alloys depends on the microstructural arrangement, more specifically on the grain size; morphology and distribution of microstructure phases; second phases, of chemical composition heterogeneities; inclusions; porosity, etc. It is known that these intrinsic aspects of the microstructure essentially depend on the manufacturing parameters, that is, solidification speed, deformation rate, machining speed, type of heat treatments, etc. The term Alloy Design refers to the knowledge-driven approach to developing the synthesis of new metallurgical materials. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of microstructural morphology on the corrosion resistance of an Al-2Ni-0.5Co alloy. Microstructural characterizations will be carried out with Al-2%Ni-0.5Co alloys that will be produced through the technique of directional solidification, this procedure will allow obtaining samples solidified in different values of cooling rate. Tests will be performed on potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Then, a microstructural characterization involving optical and electron microscopy will be carried out in the corroded region. Finally, correlations will be performed between the microstructural parameters previously obtained with the electrochemical tests. (AU)
