Abstract

Due to advances in health care, individuals with Cerebral Palsy (CP) had their life expectancy increased, but information on the acquisition of autonomy in participation, and on how relevant factors change over time during the transition to adulthood in this population in Brazil are practically non-existent. Objectives: To identify determinants for the acquisition of autonomy in participation of Brazilian adolescents and young adults with cerebral palsy, aged between 13 and 30 years. Methods: Cross-sectional study. 130 individuals with CP with cognitive ability to respond to the proposed instruments will be recruited. The components of body function will be evaluated: level of cognition; personal factors: sociodemographic characteristics and perceived and self-efficacy; environmental factors: family's sociodemographic characteristics and access to services; activity: functional classification, functional performance and self-management skills in health; and participation: autonomy in participation and functional performance. Data analysis: Combined multiple regression models will be applied to analyze what are the determinants for the acquisition of autonomy in participation. Expected results: The results of this study will provide relevant and unprecedented information about adolescents and young adults with CP in transition in Brazil, with the identification of determinants for autonomy. These data will enable the knowledge of critical aspects for the transition and improvement of the services offered. (AU)
