Abstract

This project continues the theoretical-methodological proposal of the Critical Geographic Cartography (CGC), presented in our doctoral thesis in 2008. The CGC is based on the critical theory of the map and on the use of three intercomplementary cartographic approaches: semiology of graphics, cartographic visualization and chorematics/graphic modeling. In the context of CGC, chorematics/graphic modeling is the cartographic approach that most contributes to understanding and practicing (carto)graphic representation as a research tool and geographic discourse. The CGC is not finished, but under construction. At the stage in which the CGC is, in order to advance in its construction, it is essential that we carry out an in-depth study of chorematics/graphic modeling, seeking to identify and analyze its theoretical bases, method and methodological procedures, which constitutes part of the general objective of this project. In an articulated way, we also aim to advance in the use of chorematics/graphic modeling and, therefore, it is also part of the general objective of this proposal to update and improve the graphic modeling exercise for agrarian Brazil that we proposed in 2008, as part of the Brazilian Agrarian Question Atlas (BAQA). The results of the research abroad will help us to advance in the construction of the CGC and the BAQA, expanding the contributions they can offer to Brazilian Geography and society, as they are unprecedented proposals.
