Abstract

Hollow-core microstructured optical fibers assume nowadays a prominent position in photonics due to the impact of their development on fields ranging from fundamental physics to applied areas such as the development of devices and sensors. Among the potentialities of hollow-core fibers, one finds their capability of acting, simultaneously, as waveguides and micro-reservoirs, as their microstructure can be filled with liquids of interest. Such fibers present themselves, therefore, as promising platforms for the realization of experiments on the optical characterization of liquids. In this framework, one presents this project, whose aim is to investigate the application of microstructured hollow-core fibers in optofluidics. Thus, the student will develop procedures for filling the fibers with liquids and study methods for light coupling into them. Specifically, the activities proposed in this project will encompass the design of optofluidic cells, the study of the impact of the liquid-filling on the optical properties of the fibers, as well as the realization of characterization experiments of the system's optical response within the context of absorption spectroscopy, for example. One expects that the results generated within this project can provide contributions allowing the development of optofluidic devices and sensors employing microstructured hollow-core fibers.(AU)
