Abstract

The proposed Research Internship Abroad (BEPE) will be carried out at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, under the supervision of Professor Carolina Vanegas Carrasco, between February and July 2023. This project aims to analyze the emergence and consolidation of the artistic bronze casting in Buenos Aires between the 1880s and 1940s, as well as the professional education of skilled labor in this craft. In this sense, the BEPE project is in line with the general proposal of the doctoral project developed in Brazil, dedicated to the study of Brazilian and Argentine artistic casting. On the one hand, we will consider the foundry workshops that were not specialized in artistic works, but which played a pioneering role in this activity, such as the Parque de Artillería of Buenos Aires, where the first monuments built in the country were cast in bronze. On the other hand, we will also analyze the performance of artistic foundry workshops specialized in this type of work, some of which were opened by sculptors in the late 19th century, such as Alejo Joris and Pasquale Fosca. By consulting the main Argentine archives and libraries, such as the Archivo General de la Nación, we intend to identify documentary sources that can contribute to the progress of this research.
