Abstract

Global changes caused by human activities modify biodiversity at alarming rates and freshwater ecosystems are particularly sensitive to such activities. Warming and nutrient enrichment alter organism sizes, species composition and energy fluxes in freshwater systems. However, few studies have assessed the effects of the interaction between warming and nutrient enrichment on aquatic communities, and in the Neotropics, this knowledge is even more scarce. The aims of this project are to investigate the effects of warming and nutrient enrichment on aquatic communities assembly (niche and neutral assembly) and on the relationship between body mass and abundance of organisms (size spectra). These aims would be assessed through an experimental and field survey studies. In the experimental study, I will investigate both community assembly and size spectra using a mesocosm simulating real lacustrine communities, enabling to isolate the effects of warming and nutrient enrichment from other potentially confounding variables on aquatic communities. In the field survey study, I will use datasets form tropical and temperate regions to understand how will affect size spectra parameter of aquatic communities. The results of this project will improve our understanding of the impacts of warming and nutrient enrichment assembly and energy flux (size spectra) of aquatic communities, and recommend preventive measures in future plans for aquatic conservation.
