Abstract

Chromosomal Translocations between X and autosomes are a common cause of male infertility in many species, including those from the Drosophila genus. Such a phenomenon is associated in the literature with a regulatory mechanism called Meiotic Sex Chromosome Inactivation (MSCI). Our most recent research has demonstrated that the loss of RNA polymerase II activity during the last phases of meiosis I on the X and 4th chromosomes causes their inactivation. It is unclear, however, whether inactivation is chromosomally associated or tied to a nucleus territory where those chromosomes are recruited to. In order to test the territory hypothesis and the causes of male infertility in Drosophila males, this project intends to use 7 lineages of Drosophila melanogaster carring translocations between X and autosomal 2nd chromosome - fertile and infertile - to investigate with cytological approaches the transcriptional activity of translocated chromosomes in different spermatogenic stages and analyze their sperm structures. Therefore, we expect to elucidate the regulation features of the X chromosome inactivation and their impact on male fertility. (AU)
