Abstract

Within the literature, the most influential theory on the phenomenon of political and social polarization points out that its roots are related to the deepening of economic inequality in democracies. This postulate, however, contrasts with the movement witnessed in the first decade of the 2000s in Latin America, in which polarization advanced in a context of reducing inequality in the region as a whole. In this sense, the present project proposes to investigate an alternative explanation that, rather than the increase in inequality, polarization is related to the advance of redistribution performed through social policies in democratic contexts. This greatly intensifies political competition and generates incentives for opponents to mobilize a polarization strategy, either to consolidate an acquired advantage or to counter that gained by one of the opponents. To test this hypothesis, I will employ the Time series cross-sectional (TSCS) method that combines longitudinal and cross-sectional statistical analysis, with 17 Latin American countries between 1990 and 2019. In addition, based on the most different method, I will conduct two case studies: Argentina and Brazil.
