Abstract

The objective of this research is to recover, in four periodicals of the Brazilian liberal press, Jornal do Brasil, O Globo, Manchete and Veja, the political debates preceding and concomitant to the Malvinas/Falklands War, in a clipping that extends from 1980 to 1982. We will focus on an analysis of the publications of articles, editorials, columns, reports, letters from readers, illustrations and advertisements from the four periodicals, comparing the horizon of expectation inaugurated by the approximation between the Brazilian and Argentine dictatorships with the horizon of expectation established during the experience of the Malvinas/Falklands War, evaluating the war as a factor of instability on their conservative projects for Brazil. We adopted the transnational perspective because we realized that the borders were not clear in the demarcated periodization, not only because of the political approximation between the two countries, but also because journalists, intellectuals, politicians, diplomats, activists and ordinary people from several countries crossed borders using the Brazilian liberal press as a vehicle to debate, often with replies and rejoinders, the course of the war, evaluating the impacts on their respective countries, on regional and even global politics, engaging in solutions that escaped diplomatic forums and, from time to time, proposing referrals to these same forums. Likewise, relevant aspects of the politics, society and culture of Brazil and Argentina may have changed during the war, in a movement of construction between places.
