Abstract

The development of new battery materials has increased in the last decade due to the demand for new technologies to be used in mobility as in smart distribution energy grid. Many research groups and companies have spent tremendous effort to improve energy density in lithium ion batteries and to cut production costs, since the chemistry in these devices are still very similar to those used in the earlier commercialisation in the 1990s. However, there are critics from some research groups and companies on the reports made by most of research studies. The majority of complains are related to the electrode preparation, cell assembling in the laboratorial scale and the amount of electrolyte. This project will systematically study protocols that are essential in an industrial battery assembly line but are many times overlooked by academia, as the amount of active material in the electrode, its calendering (compression) and its impact in battery performance, in addition to the effect of electrolyte amount by the battery capacity (uL/(mA h)). With that, we hope to close the gap between the data reported by academia with that reached by companies.
