Abstract

Mechanochromic materials have the potential to be used in the human motion monitoring since they can provide intuitive colorimetric responses discernible with naked eyes. However, the fabrication of functional wearables remains challenging because the mechanochromic effect is usually manifested in films that are difficult to be crafted into customized devices. It has been recently proposed that such mechanochromic films could be directly attached to the human body for motion monitoring; but, in the few proof-of-concept examples, the coupling is normally made with tape or glue which is far from the ideal for a costumer product. Thus, in this project we propose to develop stamp-like mechanochromic sensors for human motion monitoring that can be permanently applied on personal clothing. The coupling of stamp-like sensors is much more organic because they can be shaped, bended and stretched by the body without the need of additional artifices. In parallel, we propose to adapt our computer vision (CV) system to work with the new sensors during physical activities and provide real-time information about the personal mobility in a noninvasive manner.
