Abstract

The production of cold and dense atomic clouds requires high control of the magnetic fields existing in the atomic cloud region. In our case, the use of a narrow transition from strontium to cooling means that this control must have a precision of milliGauss, and in addition it must be in real time, as there is a need for fields with different values at different times in the experimental sequence. This scientific initiation project consists of the construction of a set of 6 circuits that will be fed by sources of current, and that will control the current sent to magnetic field coils in quasi-Helmholtz configuration as a function of an analog signal sent by a control computer. The temporal response of the circuit will be characterized with a signal generator. Finally, these circuits will be added to the experiment to produce cold atoms, and the effect of magnetic field control will be characterized from its effect on the experimental sequence of production of atomic clouds. A report will be produced, for laboratory reference purposes, containing characterizations and various quantitative indicators.
