Abstract

The biofuel production, especially ethanol, has been stimulated in Brazil for a long time. Nowadays, RenovaBio's policy has main goal to increase the production of biofuels seeking environmental, economic, and social sustainability. As a result of the ethanol production expansion, conflicting issues regarding land use arise, such as competition with food crops and impacts on deforestation. Additionally, the capability to mitigate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions is questioned, due to the replacement of fossil fuel with first or second generations biofuels. Sugarcane-livestock integration systems could enable the increase of ethanol production in a sustainable manner, minimizing the negative impacts with increase in the sustainability of both sugarcane fields and livestock. This project proposes to build metamodels to evaluate the sugarcane-livestock integration systems under economic, environmental, and social aspects. These metamodels will compose an optimization structure, which will assist in the identification of the most sustainable configurations, through the Thematic Project to which this postdoctoral project is linked, and which can serve as an instrument to guide new public policies aimed at sustainable development of bioenergy and livestock production chains.
