Abstract

The excessive use and inadequate management of pesticides cause serious environmental problems. Monitoring and detecting pesticides efficiently are subjects that still require a lot of research. Thus, it is necessary to invest in studies looking for efficient, simple, and sustainable platforms, aiming to monitor workers, food, and the environment. In this context, we propose the development of paper-based platforms as a common element for application in electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) and Surface-Amplified Raman Scattering (SERS) targeting sensory applications. EGTs and SERS will be used as complementary tools for the detection of thiabendazole (TBZ) and acephate (ACP) pesticides. The use of paper as a substrate has attracted attention for electronic applications and also for the SERS platform, due to its lightness, flexibility, versatility, low cost, and for being ecologically friendly. TBZ and ACP detections using EGTs and SERS, in a complementary way and from the same paper substrate, may result in a new analytical platform with more accurate and reliable results. To manufacture the EGTs, laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes will be used directly on paper substrates. For SERS, metallic nanoparticles (Ag or Au) will be used, which will be deposited or synthesized in situ on paper, using energetically favorable and environmentally friendly chemical or physical methods. The main motivation for this proposal is the development of methods that contribute to scientific knowledge in the sensors field. This project will be developed at Nova School of Science and Technology - Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Portugal, under Prof. Rodrigo Martins supervision. Prof. Rodrigo Martins' team has expertise in the application of paper as a substrate in various types of sensors. The internship abroad (BEPE) will complement the postdoctoral project being carried out in Brazil through the optimization of SERS and EGT substrates, on paper, as complementary tools for pesticide detection.
