Abstract

This project has objective to study the representation of the female figure in the series of engravings, Los Desastres de la Guerra, authored by, Francisco y Lucientes de Goya (1746-1828), produced probably between the years 1810 and 1815, in the context of the Napoleonic invasions and occupation of Spain. Among the eighty-two engravings, few have been dated, being made a single impression of proof during the life of the artist, the first edition came to the public only in 1863. Considering that the engravings were made during the events, we will rely on the perspective of image as testimony, which seeks to analyze the testimonial character and investigate the degree of historicity of the images. Such an approach will allow questioning the degrees of agency of the images created by Goya. The research seeks to explore political meanings implied in the engravings, and its importance as a denunciation and warning to the Spanish leaders. Among the issues that will be analyzed, we seek to understand Goya's imagination in relation to female figures, to what extent they embody the allegories of resistance or an ideal of libertarian force.
