Abstract

The global incidence of sickle cell disease (SCD) is 20-25 million people, being more common in certain ethnic groups, such as African descent. Its clinical manifestations are heterogeneous and its therapeutic management is complex. Recently, the scientific community has shown interest in the possible correlation of SCD with statins. Recent studies have shown that, through still unknown mechanisms, statins regulate inflammatory mediators, which could possibly help patients with SCD, in addition to having anticoagulant effects. Therefore, the benefits and risks of statins as part of the therapeutic care of patients with SCD need to be evaluated. Thus, a systematic review of the literature will be carried out to map, critically evaluate and synthesize the evidence on the efficacy and safety of statins for this purpose. The protocol was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database and the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook for Reviews of Interventions will be followed for the planning and development of the review. The report will be written following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA 2020) [Page 2021].
