Effect of limonene extract on the bond strength of caries-affected dentin

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the use of limonene extract (LIM) on the bond strength to cariesaffecteddentin after 24 hours and 6 months of aging. Eighty healthy human molars will beselected and class I cavities (6 mm x 7 mm x 4 mm) will be prepared in their pulp chambers with245 carbide burs at high-speed. Afterward, the teeth will be separated into four groups (n=20)according to different protocols of demineralization (DE) and remineralization (RE) (37 °C for 8days): Positive control (Dentine without demineralization and without LIM); Healthy+LIMGroup (Dentine without demineralization and with LIM) - LIM+RE/2h; Negative Control(Demineralized dentine without LIM) - DE/14h + RE/10h; Carious+LIM Group (Demineralizeddentine with LIM) - DE/14h + LIM+RE/2h + RE/8h. After the treatments, two layers of theadhesive system (Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE) will be applied in self-etch mode and thecavities will be restored with composite (Filtek Z350, 3M ESPE). The restored samples will besectioned into sticks of 0,9 mm2, separated, and stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h and 6months. After these periods, the sticks will be subjected to microtensile test (OM 100, Odeme),and the data will be analyzed according to the most appropriate statistical test. Fracture patternswill be observed using optical microscope (VHM100, Keyence).
