Abstract

The Atlantic Forest is one of the most fragmented ecosystems in the world, representing the future trend of other tropical forests. Thus, the restoration of native vegetation in this biome is essential to recover and protect the biodiversity of this global hotspot, in addition to guaranteeing the provision of essential ecosystem services for the population and for agricultural activities. In order to have large-scale restoration, it is necessary to implement public policies that allow, in an efficient way, to achieve this objective. To this end, incentive policies should complement command and control policies to ensure the recovery of these areas in the biome. It is in this scenario that Payments for Environmental Services (PES) programs become important, as they aim to promote the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, while generating economic benefits for the communities involved. Thus, the effective functionality and success of this policy is only possible through the participation of society. Thus, the objective of this study is to understand the perception of quilombola communities and family producers about PES programs in Vale do Ribeira - SP. This information will be important for the management of ongoing programs and the implementation of new programs, optimizing the application of resources and maximizing socio-economic and environmental gains.
