Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of intranasal oxygen (O2) supplementation in prevention or treatment of hypoxemia in chemical restraint swine and its impact on anesthesia recovery. Twenty 200 and 230 days old pigs, weighing 140 to 170 kg, will give 2 mg/kg ketamine + 10 µg/kg dexmedetomidine + 0.1 mg/kg diazepam combination. Immediately after induction, 10 animals will be supplied with 5 L/min oxygen (O2) and 10 will not receive any supplementation. Heart rate, pulsatile oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and rectal temperature will be assessed at 5 minutes to 30 minutes post-induction. Arterial blood samples will be withdrawn to assess hydrogenic potential (pH), arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2), base excess (BE-), bicarbonate concentration (HCO3-), electrolytes (Na+, K+ and Ca2+), glucose (Glu), hematocrit (Hct) and hemoglobin (Hb). The anesthesia recovery will be assessed by a species-specific scale. It is expected that intranasal O2 supplementation will be effective to maintain satisfactory PaO2 levels to prevent or even treat hypoxemia, and also to improve the quality of the anesthetic recovery in swines undergoing dissociative anesthesia.Key words: Chemical restraint, hypoxemia, oxygen supplementation, swine.
