Abstract

The power system is composed of several apparatus, and an important one is the transmission line. The Brazilian Interconnected System (SIN) has long transmission lines that are switched continuously due to protection actuation or scheduled maintenance procedure. The switchings provoke transient disturbances that must be previously identified to design the devices to stand the event, or to propose mitigation techniques to ensure safety and reliability to the electrical service. In the present research, an electrical system based on real Brazilian system data is modeled and analyzed. Regular electromagnetic tools will be used to study a long transmission line energization switching. The main concepts defined in international and Brazilian standards will be considered. The test system will be a simple one, in order to allow the student to grasp the basic concepts. Along the research new topics will be presented and the student will be able to apply the theory of the undergraduate course to calculate the shunt compensation and pre-insertion resistor value, among others.
