Abstract
The Brazilian Electrical System will enlarge significantly in the near future and it is important to qualify new researches with state-of-art technologies in order to allow them to coordinate and participate in the fore-coming system expansion projects. The Electromagnetic Transient Study Group, coordinated by Professor Maria Cristina Tavares, is formed by graduated and under-graduated students who use in their researches the worldwide used transient simulation tools, such as ATP and PSCAD. Besides, theoretical developments are also performed with Matlab e Mathematica. In the present project the research group activities in several areas are described, such as: very long transmission systems, innovative methods to enhance single and three-phase auto reclosing procedure for alternated current (AC) transmission lines, development of secondary arc mathematical model. Regarding very long transmission system, the group is involved in Half-Wave Length (HWL) transmission for the fore coming very large AC transmission trunks connecting large hydro power plants located in Amazon region to load centers at South-East and North-East Brazilian regions. New contributions to HWL distance protection, fault selectivity, fault location, single-phase reclosure, circuit-breaker specification and electromagnetics transients are presented. In the present project contributions to secondary arc mathematical model will be presented, as well as computer visual tools to obtain arc elongation. RTDS simulator will be used daily in our researches, for HWL studies and protection developments, such as single and three-phase reclosure and transformer differential protection for fault within few coils.
