Abstract

This project will address the correspondence of the experimentalists from the first half of the twentieth century to deconstruct the interpretative possibility of a messianic aspect that the figure of Henry Cowell may represent in the formation of experimental aesthetics, as well as to explore the link between the transcendentalist philosophy in the construction of the American experimental thinking as something indigenous. To achieve it, based on a discussed and adopted concept of experimentalism and in the existing bibliography on the subject, we will make a study of the transcendentalists' prerogatives that were impellent in molding the thinking of the first experimentalists and the selection, translation, and critical analysis of the experimentalists' correspondence from the first half of the twentieth century. Herewith, we hope to bring into the limelight the many (re)agents of experimentalism catalyzed by Cowell, leading or supporting, that made it possible in the post-war and demystify the underlying idea of a part of the current musicology of experimentalism as an autonomous product of the second half of the twentieth century.
