Abstract

As music bands, both civil and military, they played an important role in São Paulo's urban cultural formation at the turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth, a defining period in the life of the city. They were privileged means of communication of all type of music and it form of diffusion was public. Equally, they collaborate to consolidate certain popular genres and musicians training organizations and rare professionalization space. Although multiple functions those bands we already know, unfortunately still remains a lack of information about their history. The present project has as its main objective to investigate an update of musical groups and their role in the formation of the musical circuit of São Paulo in the early years of the twentieth century. For this, it is intended to make an inventory of the civil bands that are presented in the city of São Paulo in the period. For the development of mapping the places of action and cataloging their repertoires; identify their most active professionals and their forms of organization, work methods and professionalization. The sources that allow the approach of the slippery object are reluctant and, therefore, they have to be varied. Thus, the records annotated by cultural press in gestation and periodical press and permanent and rich documentation; The serial accompaniment of the periodicals can inform the scene of the bands and also indicate how the construction of the musical taste took place. From data, to scour and compose the phonographic residues and those edited in the form of scores, important, although often, unproductive task. Finally, the remnants and direct and indirect memorialist writings of artists and chroniclers of the city are important. We believe that this way will be able to approach elements that made up the São Paulo musical scene in the passage of the XIX-XX centuries and understand better this time of the cultural history of the city.
