Abstract

The boiling phenomena and the heat transfer mechanisms involved in this process has been received a lot of attention since the last century. This attention is because of the high heat transfer capacity related to the thermal liquid-gas phase change, making this process very useful for the development of refrigerating and power generating devices. However, because of its complexity the phenomenon has still not been completely understood. Therefore, a lot of researches have been developed trying to understand the physical mechanisms involved and the influence of some parameters such as surface characteristics or fluid properties, in the heat transfer rate during this process. In this way, the present project proposes the development of a simulation tool based in the lattice Boltzman method (LBM) capable to simulate the boiling process, focusing in the simulation of single bubble nucleation and pool boiling in hot surfaces, considering organic fluids or others available in literature. The LBM is a mesoscale method, which presents some facilities in comparison with the traditional methods for incorporating the physical phenomena that occur in multiphase systems. This includes the interface dynamic movements, the collapse and separation of bubbles, the interactions between the fluid and solid surfaces and the incorporation of acting forces over the system. First, it will be performed a critical study of the several LBM models for two-phase liquid-gas systems, focusing in the phase-field methods. These models have shown a good performance in the simulation of systems with high density and viscosity ratios, commonly found in real applications. In the sequence, it will be developed a new LBM model for the simulation of thermal liquid-gas phase change phenomena. The model will be first tested with the solution of traditional problems, being further employed in the simulation of the desired real problems, which are the single bubble nucleation and the pool boiling in hot surfaces. An experimental study will be also performed during a research internship abroad (BEPE) at University of A Coruña, in order to get experimental data for comparing and validating the numerical solutions from the new developed model. The realization of the proposed project will allow the obtaining of a simulation tool of great utility for the scientifical researches in the pretended area, as the consolidation of the research group.
