Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common subtype of esophageal cancer worldwide, with dysplasia being a precursor lesion. It is known that there are differences between concepts and terminologies between Eastern and Western pathologists in the histological diagnosis of adenoma, dysplasia and carcinoma in neoplastic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract. So far, few studies have been published regarding the pathological criteria in the classification of early esophageal cancer and its precursor lesions. The ideal classification, follow-up and treatment of low-grade dysplasia has not yet been elucidated. The aim of this study is to describe the degree of agreement between Japanese and Brazilian pathologists regarding the histological classification of early esophageal lesions and to evaluate tumor markers and accuracy in predicting progression to cancer.
