Abstract

This international internship project is a part of the master's degree research "The New Right in International Relations: the role of Students for Liberty (SFL) in promoting neoliberal rationality in Brazil (2012/2022)". The main goal of the master's degree research is to map and systematize the practices of the transnational United States-based libertarian organization Students for Liberty (SFL) in Brazil between 2012 and the Brazilian general elections of 2022. As we analyze SFL's activities in the country during that period, we aim to comprehend the historical precedents which culminated in political, legal-institutional, and social repercussions in the Brazilian domestic context, corresponding to the consolidation of a political rationality associated with the rise of the far-right. To achieve these objectives, we deem it necessary to understand more about the intellectual history of the libertarian perspective in the US, therefore gaining insight into the American domestic context in which organizations such as the SFL appeared and started to operate transnationally, generally in the aftermath of the crisis of 2008. Hence, we propose a research internship under Prof. Dr. Jeff Maskovsky. The internship is intended to last for a six-month period as an International Visiting Researcher at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY Graduate Center), New York City. Prof. Dr. Maskovsky's current research significantly contributes to this debate, for it concerns itself with the recent rise of right-wing movements in the US and elsewhere. During that period, I could attend lectures, weekly colloquia, and other academic programs offered by CUNY, as well as contact other high-level researchers who study contemporary right-wing politics in the US and worldwide.
