Abstract

This research aims to investigate, through a meticulous exegesis of the Greek text of the Nicomachean Ethics, edited by Bywater (1890), and the constant dialogue with the tradition of commentators of the Aristotelian work, such as Angioni (2009a, 2009b, 2009c, 2011a , 2011b), Broadie (1991), Brown (2009), Cooper (1975), Irwin (1999) and Taylor (2006), among others, what is the exact function that Aristotle ascribes to the notion of deliberation (bouleusis). The relevance of such an investigation relies on the fact that the correct apprehension of the meaning of this notion allows us to understand in depth what are and how the main concepts that structure Aristotelian ethical thought are articulated. In this sense, my research intends to elucidate to what extent and in what way the notion of deliberation plays an important role in the achievement of virtuous actions and in the consolidation of the virtuous character. I intend to show that deliberation can be understood as a rational procedure that requires the joint work of two virtues, that of character and phronsis, and that results in the formulation of long-term purposes (prohaireseis) that, if endowed with intrinsic moral value and fully properly implemented, they accomplish the goal of virtue of character and, ultimately, eudaimonia.
