Abstract

Serrasalmidae fishes represent one of the most diverse animals and most described species from Characiformes. This diversity is reflected in different eating habits and in cytogenetic variation at diploid numbers and in the presence of supranumeric chromossomes. Myloplus is a gender from the Serrassalmidae family, these animals are from Neotropical region and are popularly known as pacu-CD. Until now, only three species have been cytogenetically characterized and have 2n=58 as a diploid number. Myloplus tiete is a specie which is found in the upper Paraná River Basin but there are none cytogenetic records about her. Furthermore, this Scientific Iniciation project will consider satellite DNAs (satDNAs) that are repeated DNA elements that are organized in tandem which are usually found in heterochromatic regions and constitutes an important part of the genetic material from eukaryotic organisms. Therefore, cytogenetically characterization from Myloplus tiete and mapping satDNAs from its chromossomes will allow to comprehend the processes that led to its caryotipic variation while the repetitive DNAs from two different populations of Myloplus tiete are being studied.
