Abstract

There is a growing demand for projects with advanced ceramics, resulting in the need to study the manufacturing processes of these materials, including grinding. However, grinding is a process that generates a high temperature, which makes it necessary to use cutting fluids, which are harmful to the environment. At the same time, there is a demand from today's society for more sustainable processes that do not harm the environment. Therefore, it is interesting to try to make possible the application of the Minimum Quantity of Lubricant (MQL) in the grinding of advanced ceramics. However, preliminary studies indicated that MQL alone is not enough to generate good results in ceramic grinding. Therefore, the present work aims to use techniques and concepts complementary to MQL to try to identify a way to enable the grinding of advanced ceramics through a more ecologically correct process. Therefore, some concepts that have already been validated, separately, for steel grinding will be applied in the grinding of advanced ceramics in a combined way, for exemple, the application of MQL with cleaning the grinding wheel, MQL with fluid dilution in water and MQL using a new technology of volatile corrosion inhibitors, in addition to the combination of these factors. In this way, it is intended to obtain results that are satisfactory linked to a reduction in production costs, through a process that is sustainable. The main variables used by world industries will be addressed, namely: roughness (Ra), roundness erros, diametral wear of the grinding wheel, G ratio, grinding power and process cost analysis. In addition, confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy will be used to evaluate the ground surface and the surface of the grinding wheel.
